Ohio Elite Girls Take 3rd Place
The Ohio Elite Girl’s U19 Rugby Team, comprised of five league teams, took third place in the Midwest Championship Tournament this past weekend.
The first game on Saturday was an impressive 46-10 victory over home field-advantage Indiana. Scoring in this game included tries from Caitlin Weigel (’15 Hudson), Casi Mauszak (’15 SJA), Rachael Kean (’16 SJA), and Erin McGinty (’15 SJA). Ali DeCrane (’14 SJA), lead the team as captain and in scores by completing one try, four conversion kicks, and one penalty kick.
The girls took on Minnesota next, but fell just short in a heartbreaking 19-17 loss. The girls were able to fight back and made a real effort in the last minutes of the game but lost to the clock. Scoring for Ohio included one completed conversion kick by Ali DeCrane (’14 SJA) and one try each for Casi Mauszak (’15 SJA), Rachael Kean (’16 SJA), and Erin McGinty (’15 SJA).
Sunday the girls dished out a punishment to the Illinois Tornados with a final score of 25-12 to capture third place in the tournament. Scoring came quickly in this game with tries by forwards and backs including Casi Mauszak (’15 SJA), Rachael Kean (’16 SJA), Cynthia Fuentes (’15 Lakewood), Dominique Oates (’14 Hudson).
The Ohio Elite Girl’s U17 Rugby Team also got some practice in against Indiana this past weekend. Both teams are learning to work together with a new playing style under the leadership of head coach, Phil Payne (OSU Women’s Rugby). The teams travel next weekend to Pittsburgh, PA to take on Potomac teams in the Challenge Cup.
