Rugby Ohio Crowns 4 State Champions
Rugby Ohio, held is annual Ohio High School State Championship games this past Saturday at Hudson’s Dante Lavelli Stadium.
In the day’s first match, Brunswick defeated St. Joseph Academy’s JV team 22-19 in double-overtime to claim the Division 2 girl’s state title. Rachel Lash, was given play of the game honors, and finished the day with four tries and the game-winning kick.
St. Edward’s JV side defeated the Toledo Celtics 21-14 in the day’s next match to claim the Division 2 boy’s state title. Player of the game honors went to Connor Werling.
St. Joseph Academy’s varsity squad defeated Hudson 78-5 to win the Division 1 girls state championship. This is their second consecutive state championship and third and four years.
Jackie Harter, a junior outside center, scored five times for the Jaguars. …”I love this team like a family… And winning back-to-back titles means a lot to this team.” Said Harter.
St. Ignatius defeated St. Edward 31-12 to claim the Division 1 boy’s state title in front of an estimated crowd of 2,500 fans. This is the first Division 1 State Championship St Ignatius has every won.
St. Ignatius senior flanker Vincent Hahn scored twice for the Wildcats and earned player of the game honors.
“Starting strong is what we wanted to do and the kids really performed,” head coach Dan Arbeznik said. “The difference during the game was when it was close, we took advantage of our own opportunities.”
